Beautiful Oops Breakfast Ring
There is a wonderful children’s book by Barney Saltzberg called Beautiful Oops, where the frustration of making a mistake is reframed as an opportunity to make something surprising and, perhaps, more beautiful.
In metalsmithing, there are lot of moments within the process where the risk of a Big Oops is lurking. Famous among these is melting the bezel meant to hold a stone while soldering it in place.
When this happens, I try to find innovative ways to turn the oops into an opportunity, and sometimes that means adding a bit of fabric here and there. In this Beautiful Oops Breakfast ring, a hole is exploited to become a space for a fabric petal. The fabric has been singed at the edges to keep it from fraying, which gives it an organic edge and overall feel.
The result is still a Breakfast Ring, but better? It’s in the eye of the beholder for sure, but besides being a symbol of persistence and flexibility, these oops moments are more rare, — so if you love it, take advantage of its availability!
This ring is a size 8.
***
The Breakfast Series is a collection made with sterling silver and upcycled cardboard set beneath a glass cabochon.
This substantial ring features a 22mm cabochon set in sterling silver on an 8-gauge sterling silver band. Each side of the cabochon features a sterling nubbin.
Cheerful, elegant, and sweet - - like the best breakfasts are.
***
A NOTE on the Breakfast Series: while the cardboard used in this series is set behind glass, it is not hermetically sealed. Therefore, care should be taken to not submerge this in water. You know how you need to take care with a pearl ring? Think of it like that!
